This essay will discuss both arguments and explain why the writer is in favor of the latter.
Proponents of expanding road systems may highlight the notion that traffic density is reduced due to wider space for vehicles which eases traffic jams. To elaborate, expanded streets means a higher volume of traffic and facilitates smooth circulation of vehicles. In addition, with more alternative routes, vehicle owners have more options to choose to avoid congestion during peak hours. However, expanding roads is a short-sighted solution that may exacerbate congestion rather than alleviate it. When new roads or additional lanes are constructed, more people are encouraged to use private vehicles, ultimately leading to the same congestion levels—a phenomenon known as “induced demand.” In Vietnam, despite ongoing projects to expand major roads in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, traffic congestion remains severe, particularly during rush hours. This demonstrates that increasing road capacity does not effectively address urban mobility challenges in the long term.
Developing urban train and subway networks is an efficient and sustainable approach to reducing congestion. Mass transit systems can transport thousands of passengers simultaneously, significantly decreasing reliance on private vehicles. In Vietnam, the introduction of the Cat Linh–Ha Dong metro line in Hanoi has provided commuters with a convenient alternative to motorbikes and cars. If more metro lines are developed across major cities, traffic congestion will decline, and urban transportation will become more efficient.
In conclusion, investing in mass transit systems is a more viable solution to traffic congestion than road expansion, as it enhances urban mobility and reduces reliance on private vehicles.
